Has Google Been Hacked? ‘This Site May Harm Your Computer’ Appears on All Search Results

Posted in Media Events, AB on January 31st, 2009

harmgoogle.png

Currently all searches on Google appear with the warning message “This site may harm your computer.”

Only two links pop up in a search for news on the topic: one from a site called Thaindian News, which says,

“At roughly 9:40 pm on 31st Jan 2008 (Thai time GMT +7), any search result on google.com showed the message “This site may harm your computer” for all websites including thaindian.com

We wish to reassure users that thaindian.com does not indulge in these activities and this is a goof up by Google affecting all websites.

And one from iTwire.com, which currently won’t load. Meanwhile Twitter is all over it! Is this the result of a hacking, or a glitch, or merely some formal announcement that Google is officially stepping into its role as Big Brother?

UPDATE A friend in the UK says Google is working fine there.

False Media Rumor Rocks Twitter

Posted in , AB on January 30th, 2009

mediaisdyingrumor.jpg

Earlier this evening, themediaisdying, a twitter page that posts news of industry layoffs, published an item saying that the Seattle Post-Intelligencer was “officially closing.” Thankfully, the bad news isn’t true– for now.

On January 9th, it was announced that the Hearst Corporation was putting the Post-Intelligencer up for sale and would shut the paper down if a buyer wasn’t found within 60 days. The post on themediaisdying indicated that the paper was closing ahead of schedule. FishbowlNY spoke with Post-Intelligencer managing editor David McCumber who told us that themediaisdying’s report was false “as so many rumors are on Twitter.” Since then, we’ve found the source this story was spread.

Who’s That Girl? [This Week In Flesh]

Posted in AB, fleshback, Roundup, straight, Week in Review, This week in flesh on January 30th, 2009

A look back at the week that was…

· Well, that Katy Perry nude was a big ol’ fake, but we are really, really sure this is actually Sarah Gardiner on Abby Winters.
· Want to be Paris Hilton’s BFF? You must be this topless.
· Who needs the king of pain when there’s the “King of Coochie”?
· Dita + Kink = swoon.
· “This Ain’t The Patridge Family”… but you can still sing along (and jack along too!).
· Librarians. Uh, that’s all we got.
· In our courts, everyone is innocent until proven filthy.

23/6 Closes Its Offices, Downsizes to Three Staffers

Posted in AB, The Revolving Door on January 30th, 2009

236hffgg.pngFBNY has learned that 23/6, the online humor site launched in 2006, has been downsized to three staffers and has closed its offices. The site will continue as a Huffington Post vertical, to be run out of the HuffPo offices, and will use freelance pieces from the staffers who have been let go.

Huffington Post acquired 23/6 earlier this month from IAC after the company pulled its support at the end of 2008.
