Sex Sells… Garden Gnomes? [Romania]

Posted in in the news, funny, romania, AB, Escorts, straight, Weird, Stupid on November 20th, 2008

Romanian businessman Cristi Birgu has attracted attention by trying to drum up sales for his garden gnome business with the strategic use of prostitutes. Plastic prostitutes, that is: Birgu has the miniature ladies of the evening—also manufactured by his company—placed outside his home, in the hopes that they’ll attract potential buyers. Somehow, we just can’t see much overlap between the people who buy garden gnomes and the people who solicit sex workers—but hey, what do we know? (ananova.com)

Brothel Patrons Get Branded [Desperate Economies Call For Desperate Measures]

Posted in tattoos, money, prostitutes, germany, AB, Escorts, straight, Brothels, Desperate economies call for desperate measures on November 19th, 2008

A German brothel has come up with an interesting advertising plan (and economic stimulus package!): men who get the brothel’s name tattooed on their arm will get free entry into the establishment for the rest of their life (as well as discounts on certain services, like lap dances). So, uh, what would it take to get you guys to tattoo the Fleshbot logo on your arms? (telegraph.co.uk)

Reality Show Seeks Escort For Non-Exploitative Good Time [Bad Ideas]

Posted in tv, media, AB, Escorts, straight, callgirls, Reality TV, Bad ideas on November 18th, 2008

Call girls (or escorts, if you prefer) are notoriously private people, who generally prefer to stay off the radar as they pursue the glorious, age old career of exchanging sex and companionship for money. Reality shows, on the other hand, are fundamentally about being on the radar and exploiting the intimate details of your private life for financial gain. We’re not sure what you’d call a bizarro world where those two things come together. Oh wait, no, we do know: Hollywood. (reversecowgirlblog.blogspot.com, thumbnail star via Ask Jolene)

Tyra Takes On Sex Work [TV]

Posted in tv, models, pornstars, clips, video, AB, Escorts, straight, Tyra Banks, centerfolds, Sinnamon Love, Shay Lynn on November 17th, 2008

newVideoPlayer(”/tyra_porn_town.flv”, 506, 423,”"); We’ve had many bad interesting experiences with Tyra Banks in the past, so it comes as no surprise that we were, well, a bit confused by her latest “Porn Town” episode. Here’s the gist: Tyra takes a bunch of different sex workers (including Fleshbot Crush Object Sinnamon Love), puts them on stage, and forces them to fight over things like who’s more respected and higher status! They even get to assign each other roles in their little “Porn Town”! Who will be mayor… and who will be custodian?

Hiring An Escort Is As Easy As Ordering A Pizza, And Other Revelations [Video]

Posted in tv, sex work, clips, video, prostitution, AB, Escorts, straight, Cnbc, Carol leigh, Elizabeth bernstein, Scarlot harlot, Veronica monet on November 12th, 2008

newVideoPlayer(”/Dirty_Money_Pizza.flv”, 506, 423,”"); Last night saw the broadcast of “Dirty Money: The Business of High End Prostitution,” CNBC’s special on the world of sex work—and, specifically, escorts who cater to rich and powerful men. Over the course of an hour, host Melissa Francis walked us through the ins and outs of modern sex work, explaining things like “girlfriend experience” and The Erotic Review to ordinary families all across America. (And did you know that it’s as easy to hire an escort as it is to order a pizza? Can we get our next escort with onions and mushrooms, please?)

All kidding aside, the special was actually worth watching. Though it was—predictably—full of a great deal of sensationalism, it also took the time to interview sex workers and sex worker advocates, filling the the hour with sound bites from women like Veronica Monet and Elizabeth Bernstein. TV actually providing a well-rounded, honest look at prostitution? Amazing!

newVideoPlayer(”/Dirty_Money_College.flv”, 506, 423,”");

Most surprising moment of the night? Amid all the shock and awe, he special actually took the time to touch on serious issues, such as decriminalization, even taking the time to interview Carol Leigh, aka Scarlot Harlot, a noted sex worker’s rights activist:

newVideoPlayer(”/Dirty_Money_Decrim.flv”, 506, 423,”");

We’re not sure if this special is a sign of things to come, or just a blip on the radar—but if more networks follow CNBC’s lead, that can only be a good thing.
