Time Inc. Recruits From Across the Pond

Posted in AB, Media Companies on December 18th, 2008

auton12.18.08.jpgLayoff-fraught Time Inc. tapped Sylvia Auton, formerly the chief executive at IPC, to be one of its new vice presidents. In the position, she’ll oversee 80 magazines including Marie Claire and NME.

Auton became the CEO of IPC in 2003. For the past two years, she has commuted between London and New York every week.

Time Inc. purchased IPC in 2001, which isn’t expected to lay off any staff in the immediate future despite the struggles of the industry. Evelyn Webster, the managing director the IPC Connect division, will fill Auton’s role.

Curbed Switches Most West Coast Sites to Freelance Model

Posted in AB, Media Companies on December 15th, 2008

curbedgg.pngSo we noted earlier today that everyone’s favorite new Twitter stream was reporting that the west coast offices of Curbed had suffered some layoffs. We caught up with founder Lockhart Steele who confirmed there had been changes:

We’re transitioning most of our West Coast sites to a freelance model instead of a full-timer model; the exception to the change is Curbed LA. It’s also true that we offered the freelance positions to the current full-time editors, most of whom have indicated they’ll stay with us. This all went down about a week ago.

Of course, it sucks, and of course it’s about focusing resources on our most-trafficked (and most lucrative) sites for 2009.

In other news that loosely includes people who used to work for Gawker, Gawker is reporting that Jesse Oxfeld may have been laid-off from New York magazine.

The Media is Dying, 140 Characters at a Time

Posted in AB, Media Companies on December 15th, 2008

meddyelog.pngSo, at one of the media parties we were at over the weekend we found ourselves attempting to explain Twitter to a fellow party-goer (it’s always nice to be reminded that not the entire world, or even most of it, spends their time contemplating these things). Anyway the best analogy we could come up with was to say it was like an individualized CNN news ticker that you could subscribe to. With that in mind, those of you interested in a dedicated channel of media layoff news — 140 characters or less — may want to check out The Media is Dying, a twitter feed started by a public relations employee which attempts to keep up with all the layoff news. Per today’s piece in the Times:

Initially, The Media Is Dying was accessible only to select Twitter members, as the feed was intended to help those in the P.R. industry stay on top of the revolving entries in their address books. But requests to be included flooded the founder, who decided to go public three weeks ago. Since then, the stream, maintained at twitter.com/themediaisdying by its founder and seven volunteers from the industry, has garnered more than 3,000 subscribers. The stream tries to confirm the tips it receives; if something cannot be verified, it is posted and labeled as rumor.

A glimpse at the latest updates after the jump.

Online Dispatches: EW, Forbes.com, Double X

Posted in AB, Media Companies on December 12th, 2008

megaphone.gifKeeping an eyes on some changes occurring online this week:

  • Will EW go online only? (On a side note we imagine this will be a recurring theme in 2009 media land). Gawker was speculating on rumors that the magazine, whose print circulation has plummeted this year, may move the whole operation online since their web traffic is strong. However! Turns out it was a false lead and the magazine is “full steam ahead for 2009.”
  • Forbes.com, which suffered some layoffs a few weeks back, is further embracing its online presence with a redesign of the story pages, its award-winning Video Network, stock quotes and executive tear sheets.
  • Double X, Slate’s soon-to-be launched Web magazine for women, has tapped former Jezebel-er Jessica Grose to be their managing editor.

Last Week’s Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Layoffs Bring Year’s Total To 100

Posted in AB, Media Companies on December 9th, 2008

mslo_layoffs_dec.jpg

FishbowlNY has confirmed a new round of layoffs at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Multiple sources with inside knowledge of the situation said IT, art, production, editorial, and support staff at the MSLO offices in New York were let go last Wednesday. The next day, human resources personnel headed up to Massachusetts, according to our sources, where five ad salespeople were laid off at the Boston offices of Body and Soul magazine.

Company spokesperson Elizabeth Estroff confirmed that there were layoffs last week, but would not confirm which areas were hit and the total number of employees affected by last week’s cuts. Estroff did say that “over the course of the year, we’ve eliminated 100 positions across the company,” as MSLO has been “streamlining costs at the corporate and business unit levels throughout the entire year.”

What else changed with last week’s cuts?
