GQ Manages to Party On in Style

Posted in Media Events, AB on December 3rd, 2008

100_3517.jpgNot all the media parties have been canceled! Last night FBNY attended GQ’s Men of Style four floor high shindig at the Louis Vuitton store on 5th Ave with a whole of very expensive looking people. The event was held in honor of this year’s most “stylish” men: Dan Abrams, Gossip GirlsEd Westwick, Ugly Betty’s Eric Mabius, and Eric Ripert the chef at Le Bernadin. We caught up with Dan Abrams for a minute and asked him what exactly made him so stylish, he told us the Louis Vuitton clothes he was wearing pretty much did the trick! He also mentioned he thought David Gregory was a great pick for hosting duties at Meet the Press.

As for how GQ managed such a lavish party in this downturn, well as one party guest pointed out to us, appearances can be deceiving.

I Want Media’s ‘Media Person of the Year’

Posted in Media Events, AB on December 1st, 2008

journalist08.jpgA the year draws to a close get prepared for the usual onslaught of lists! We all know Time’s Person of the Year is a non-compete, but I Want Media, which has just launched its yearly Media Person of the Year poll may provide a slightly more open playing field. Here are your choices: Arianna Huffington, Rachel Maddow, Sam Zell, Rupert Murdoch, Tina Fey, The Twitter Trio, Mel Karmazin, Jason Kilar, Eric Schmidt, and closest to our hearts, “The Laid-Off Journalist” (also, Page Six’s pick).

Think they left some out? They are also taking nominations. We would argue that due to his magazine and newspaper selling power (not to mention the YouTube fireside chats) Barack Obama is a obvious but viable choice. Also, how about the citizen journalist, or Tina Brown? Let us know your suggestions!

Twittering Mumbai: Citizen Journalism Gets One Step Closer to the Mainstream

Posted in Media Events, AB on November 30th, 2008

25990047.JPGNot that long ago people were scoffing at the use of Twitter as viable tool for journalism. Well maybe not so much anymore! The terrorist siege in Mumbai over the weekend has proven once again how useful the mirco-blogging platform can be for reporters. Both the Times and the WSJ have run pieces on it in the last few days (during the height of the attacks we noticed the TimesBrian Stelter reaching out to anyone in Mumbai via Twitter). Jay Rosen noted (via Twitter) that the WSJ had managed to do the “Mumbai-on-Twitter story without all the “is this journalism?” hysteria.” Per the Times:

At the peak of the violence, more than one message per second with the word “Mumbai” in it was being posted onto Twitter, a short-message service that has evolved from an oddity to a full-fledged news platform in just two years.

Those descriptions and others on Web sites and photo-sharing sites served as a chaotic but critically important link among people across the world — whether they be Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn tracking the fate of a rabbi held hostage at the Nariman House or students in Britain with loved ones back in India or people hanging on every twist and turn in the standoff while visiting relatives for Thanksgiving dinner.

Thrillist Celebrates Its Third Anniversary

Posted in Media Events, AB on November 26th, 2008

3060998880_9eb99cb6e5.jpgLast night we dropped by Thrillist’s 3rd anniversary party at a packed club somewhere on Varick St., which we identified a few blocks away based on the hordes of people standing outside waiting to get in. Somehow we slipped the line only to discover that there were hordes of people on the inside too! Thrillist is very popular! They also happen to be the folks who flew us to Vegas for 36hrs last June. Viva etc.

Anyway, PRNewser’s Joe Cirallo was also there and drew some PR lessons from the party. Also, if you’re looking for photo evidence there is plenty here and here.
