Gazing Into the Kristol Ball

Posted in Media People, AB on December 29th, 2008

Over at Portfolio.com Jeff Bercovici points out the today marks the one year anniversary of the Times announcing they’d hired Bill Kristol for their op-ed page. No word yet on whether the Times intends to keep him on (or whether Kristol even wants to stay for that matter — he’s been a bit lukewarm about his employers). It’s hard to imagine them keeping Kristol, though they did hire him in the first place, so stranger things have happened. What say you readers? Should he stay or should he go?

Posted in Media People, AB on December 29th, 2008

mannewsrupe.gifPhew, that’s a whole lot of media bold-face to include in one hed. Nonetheless, David Carr did indeed review Michael Wolff’s bio of Rupert Murdoch for this past Sunday’s New York Times Book Review. Here’s a taste, though the entire thing is really worth a read.

Posted in Media People, AB on December 29th, 2008

camelot2.0.pngIt’s hard to imagine a more slippery, difficult media environment in which to launch your (very first political) campaign for a Senate seat than the one Caroline Kennedy appears to be encountering.

Behold the interview the AP did with Kennedy at a diner in Manhattan last week. The resulting article contained some notable quotes — Kennedy saying she’ll have to “work twice as hard,” and that she is an “unconventional choice” among others. All good stuff. However, the AP also released an audio version of the interview on YouTube, complete with pictures, which was picked up by The Daily Beast. The accompanying caption points out that Kennedy’s answers were “replete with ‘you knows.’” None of which made it into the article. Is Camelot ready for a 2.0 political world? Video after the jump.

Will Obama be Our First Tabloid President?

Posted in Media People, AB on December 23rd, 2008

1222_obama.jpgHard to miss the shots of our incoming President topless on the beach in Hawaii…those workouts are paying off, O! But an article over at Politico today points out that we may be treading on new ground here in terms of paparazzi and the Presidency. How much is too much (and how much skin is too much!) and who exactly has access to Barack Obama’s highly protected inner circle, particularly his daughters?

The paparazzi shots were frustrating for the photographers who are part of the press pool following Obama in Hawaii, but are restricted from approaching the president-elect’s compound. They wound up having to explain to their editors why they don’t have the same photos. It turns out a paparazzo with a large telephoto lens — and in apparent full view of the Secret Service — parked himself on the beach in Kailua, which is public.
