All the News That’s Fit to Imitate?*

Posted in Newspapers, AB on November 18th, 2008

plagiarism600pxw.jpgApparently there is not enough news to go around. Twice already this week someone has brought to our attention similar articles being published in different papers by different writers. The first example comes to us from former fishbowlNY’er Neal Ungerleider who points out that both USA Today and the Times of London ran very similar pieces on Iraq’s newly revived heavy metal music scene, two weeks apart. The USA Today article ran on Oct. 30 while the Times piece ran more than two weeks later on Nov. 16. As Neal points out, it’s understandable that the two would cover the same event, but curious that they quote the same sources, also this paragraph rings awfully similar:

USA Today:
Throughout the two-hour show, the crowd thrashed about, a sea of sweating bodies and banging heads.

Times of London:
Sweating fans thrashed, writhed and banged heads. Heavy metal was back, alive and kicking, in Baghdad.

Meanwhile! Peter Feld points out similarities between The Atlantic’s story on the Obama girls choosing a school, and the one that ran a week later in the New York Times‘ this weekend (Jeff Goldberg noted it also).

*We are sort of imitating Feld’s hed here.

The Guardian Takes A Long Hard Look At Porno Plots [Porn Plots!]

Posted in media, Newspapers, in the news, funny, humor, AB, Porn plots! on November 18th, 2008

Of all the strange mysterious mysteries of the porn world, perhaps the oddest of all is the porno plot. Fundamentally, porn exists so that we can watch two (or more!) people doing it—so why do we need some crazy set up to help us get in the mood? We may never have an answer to that question, but at least we can laugh at this this gallery of porno opening shots. Though we have to say, that rollerskating accident porno looks really compelling. AP Restructures to Provide Washington Coverage to All States

Posted in Newspapers, AB on November 17th, 2008

ggap.jpgExpanded coverage! How often to we get to write that these days? The Associated Press announced today that it will be restructuring regional reporting team in Washington in order to provide “every state with regional representation in the nation’s capital by the start of the new Congressional year.” Per the release:

Under the plan, AP’s current corps of regional reporters will be reorganized into teams from four regions…The restructuring will provide AP regional Washington coverage for 28 states that now are not represented. “Every state will soon have coverage from an AP Washington regional reporter,” said Michael Oreskes, AP managing editor for U.S. News.

Between the current economic crisis and the arrival of the Obama’s in Washington a decision to provide more widespread coverage is understandable, however one wonders if this isn’t in part a reaction to Politico’s recent partnering up with numerous papers nationwide in order to share content and ad sales. Full release after the jump.

Newspapers: Between a Rock and Extra Expensive Paper

Posted in Newspapers, AB on November 17th, 2008

Newsprint.jpgThe Newspaper industry can’t seem to catch a break. Amidst a financial crisis and plummeting ad sales and what feels like endless layoffs comes word that newsprint will cost more! Well European newsprint, that is, North American newsprint costs have already risen 33% this year, but the lack of demand (those Internets!) has up till now been offset by exporting to Europe and now it looks like that is about to end.

North American producers have suffered even more from falling demand, as the switch to the internet has taken hold faster there, but they have also been quicker to consolidate and cut capacity…North American Newsprint producers…compensated for drops in domestic demand by exporting to western Europe, Latin America and Asia. But the strengthening dollar and the steep rise in North American newsprint prices have swept away European price advantages.

WSJ.com Picks Up Mac’s Banner Advertising

Posted in Newspapers, AB on November 14th, 2008

wsj nyt.png

We’ve noted before on a number of occasions how the NYT.com occasionally runs these big banner ads that take up a third of the page (and are generally quite distracting, but in this economic media environment we’re pretty willing to put up with whatever it takes). Most noticeable are the big Mac Ads featuring a walking and talking John Hodgeman (we were once told there NYT.com placement was result of a lunch between Steve Jobs and ‘Pinch’ Sultzberger). Well it looks like Mac has expanded their business to include WSJ.com, which we noticed this morning was running a similar banner ad today. A first we think and perhaps even more noticeable since the paper itself only began running front page pictures last year.
