Dave Itzkoff Leaves New York Times for NYT

It’s Sunday Styles reporter Dave Itzkoff’s last day at the section, but he won’t be going far. After a two week break — in the midst of fashion season, no less — he’ll be returning to be a reporter on The New York Times‘ culture desk.

In the past months, Martin Arnold, Bob Candela and Wendy Sclight have left their staff positions on the culture beat (Arnold has a contract to continue writing), so there’s plenty of room for man-about-town Itzkoff.

What Exactly Is Jack Kliger’s Job?

As we reported on Wednesday, there’s been some confusion about the role of outgoing Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S.’s CEO Jack Kliger. Is he the chairman, as we thought? Or is he getting the boot from Elle’s publisher?

Anne Janas, SVP of corporate communications at HFMUS, emailed the following explanation:

For clarification on Jack Kliger’s role at Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., he is senior advisor to HFM U.S. president and CEO Alain Lemarchand through the end of the year.

Just as we suspected.

Also at HFMUS, Jack Grant, previously the vice president and publisher of Home, is the company’s new VP, integrated sales.

On Tuesday, we illustrated a post detailing ProPublica’s final staffing hires with a picture of Ron Burgundy’s crew. After seeing the item, one of company’s staffers improved upon the image — presumably between in his or her spare seconds between bringing down Microsoft and taking on Fox News. It made us laugh, so we’re running it. No matter what Vulture thinks, you can never, ever have too much Anchorman.

Like a Rolling Stone, Ed. Finds Direction Home… to Baltimore

Last night, Evan Serpick, previously an associate editor at Rolling Stone where he covered the decline of the record industry, sent an email to colleagues announcing he’ll be returning to his hometown of Baltimore to be a senior editor at the city’s namesake publication. The move shouldn’t come as a surprise considering he ended the first paragraph of a “Best of Baltimore” blog post for RS’s Capri Lounge with the sentence “Baltimore rocks!”

At Baltimore, Serpick will edit all parts of the mag. He’ll continue to freelance for RS, Spin and Blender, and gets bonus points for a great email subject line (”Gathering No Moss…”).

It’s a tumultuous time for Jann Wenner’s signature publication, which is in the midst of size decrease and a publisher switch.

Bank Robbery: You’re Doing It Wrong [Flesh Flicks]

The reason most criminals get caught is because they don’t really think their plan through. For starters, robbing a bank makes sense, but robbing a sperm bank is just pointless. You can find that stuff anywhere and it’s not that hard to collect. (Don’t worry fellas—your deposits are insured.) Also, no matter what kind of institution you decided to knock over, you have to keep yourself properly covered at all times. All those witnesses will easily be able to pick this girl’s tits out of a police lineup.

RNC ‘08: Scenes From the Riverside Press Center

FBNY took the long way to the CNN Grill today, through the Riverside Center which is doubling as the Press Tent, except unlike Denver this one has actual bathrooms and a steady Internet connection (all the media types have been raving about their work digs here). Along the way we passed Tom Brokaw having a curbside chat with David Gregory and Norah O’Donnell and Mark Whitaker discussing their NYC departure times. This is day 14 of conventioning for a lot of people and folks are getting antsy to get home.

Bob Guccione Jr.: ‘I Want to Have a Multi-title Company’ Within Six Months

During a phone conversation about his work editing Media Magazine’s “Future of Media” issue, Spin founder Bob Guccione Jr. told us there were “two or three” media properties he was considering buying. The son of Penthouse founder Bob Guccione — who had just finished having lunch with a friend from the New York Post — wouldn’t reveal which ones he’s interested in but said, “I want to have a multi-title company… Within six months, I want to have my feet planted.”

Guccione Jr. hopes to buy an existing company rather than launch a startup, but his discussion of what he would launch offered some insight into the type of property he’s looking to purchase: “At some point I’ll want to do a startup. I’m particularly interested in the food, travel, shelter and art worlds. And maybe science.”

He’s currently “deeply intrigued by the media” and is considering a range of companies. “Some are very niche, some are wide in their range,” he said. “My hope would be to start with one or the other and go the other way.”

In an article he penned for the Future of Media issue, he makes some bold predictions about the topic. After the jump, he explains which one he’d “fall on a sword” for.
